Clutch

With most of the music I don’t like, and there’s really not much of it, I still can usually gain some sense of why the band’s fans enjoy them. I know what they like about the music, I just don’t personally enjoy it. I understand why people like Creed. I understand why people like Justin Timberlake. I can kind of grasp why someone would listen to Poison. But I honestly cannot fathom how anyone can enjoy Clutch.

There is one undeniable fact, Clutch fans, that you will eventually have to admit to the world. It’s something I see mentioned in passing by hard-core Clutch fans far more often than the fans of any other horrible band, something that Clutch fans just seem to live with and not care about…

Every Clutch song is the same song. Every one of them.

Same riffs, same beat, same chords… well, they don’t really have chord changes, do they… but it’s the same mindlessly ridiculous lyrics, same vocals, those horrible shouting vocals. Now, I have no problem with screaming, howling, rasping, growling, or any other unintelligible vocal noises. I’m a huge Mike Patton fan. But these vocals… he really is just shouting, the same way I would shout at you from across the room, basically monotone talking at a high volume, and then occasionally he’ll do that low voice thing where he sounds like Fat Albert. It’s god aweful.

If you haven’t heard Clutch, avoid them like the plague.

Maybe I’ve been around too long and have had the benefit of being raised on 60’s and 70’s music, but I really don’t see what all the hype is about. Maybe the other reviewers have been raised on late- ’90’s screaming and yelling, because this CD is just more of the same. As far as the music itself goes, its easy beans – any High School-age band could play it. I’m just happy I downloaded mp3’s because I wouldn’t waste my money on this. I’m sure this review may deflate a few happy ballons out there, but so what – it’s plain simple music with screaming and yelling on just about every track. Period.

This album drops the speed of the first album and engages full-time in funky, bluesy loping grooves with more-or-less rapped vocals that occasionally growl or almost sing. Another set of entertaining lyrics helps alleviate the sameyness of these songs. Still a cool band with some cool songs.

Good album, but definitely my least favorite Clutch CD. I got into Clutch through their later albums and the band is SO much better now than when this CD was recorded. They have really expanded their sound and horizons. So in that respect this CD just doesn’t do much for me. When you compare this CD to Blast Tyrant and Pure Rock Fury it just doesn’t hold up IMO. But that’s a good thing IMO because it shows that this band just keeps getting better and better. On this CD it seems like they get trapped in a particular mood or groove and never really break out of it.
